![]() There are so many possibilities that I’d wager that the app has something to offer for everyone. One of the best parts of Widgetsmith is browsing through its extensive catalog of widget types and then tweaking your favorites to make them fit with your own style. Between the overlap with other widget types, plus the Battery and Tides widgets, there are a total of 13 widget types that can be added to a rectangular widget and themed. The rectangular widget category includes even more categories from which to choose. The photo widget isn’t for me, but I can imagine situations where someone might want to add one. Of course, the photo is rendered as a monochrome image when added to a widget, which can make images that aren’t high-contrast hard to see, but there’s also an option to isolate people from their backgrounds, which can help. ![]() It allows you to add a photo to the widget itself. Photos, which is also available to use with rectangular widgets, is interesting. The circular widget offers six categories: photo, time, weather, step counting, reminders, and astronomy, each with multiple styles and available themes. The Lock Screen view is divided between the inline text widgets that fit above the time on the Lock Screen and circular and rectangular widgets that sit below the time. There’s a new segmented control near the top of the iPhone app’s Widgets tab that toggles between Home Screen and Lock Screen widget creation. If you’ve used Widgetsmith to create Home Screen widgets, you’ll hit the ground running with Lock Screen widgets. That unique combination of experience uniquely positioned Dave to take advantage of iOS 16’s Lock Screen widgets. ![]() Also, Widgetsmith is just one of many apps Dave has released over the years, many of which included some of the best Apple Watch apps available. He’s spent the past two years refining Widgetsmith. Two years later, it’s fair to say that few people know widgets like Dave knows widgets. Then, shortly after the app’s release, it went viral when TikTokers discovered it and dropped Dave and his app squarely in the center of the Home Screen aesthetic phenomenon. The app, which was created by long-time indie developer David Smith, lets users create custom Home Screen widgets. There is a one week free trial of the Pro version so you can make sure you’ll get enough value out of it before paying for it.It’s been two years since Widgetsmith took the App Store by storm. Widgetsmith is a free download on the App Store, but you’ll want to upgrade to the subscription ($20/year or $2/month) for all the options. If you’ve not tried Widgetsmith, you are missing out on some really fun ways to spruce up your iOS home screen. You could choose a family photo, overlay some Christmas lights, and then set the countdown to 12/25/21 at midnight. If you’re counting down to Christmas, Widgetsmith includes a style to overlay a countdown on top of a photo. Once it’s saved, go back to your home screen, add a new widget, choose Widgetsmith, choose your appropriate size, and then edit the widget to pick the one that includes your photo. Change your Aesthetic/Theme, set your location, choose your alignment, and then pick your photo. I love the Photo Temp & Conditions widget as it lets me use a family photo as well as show the weather. For the photo widget, I like the small option so the photos are the right aspect ratio. Go into Widgetsmith and choose your widget size. If your family has taken Christmas-themed pictures, adding one of Widgetsmith’s holiday overlays is the perfect way to spruce it up for your iPhone home screen. Finally, edit the widget and choose the one that includes your Christmas calendar widget. Find the size widget you choose and add it. Once it’s saved, tap and hold on your iOS home screen, select the plus to add a widget, and look for Widgetsmith in your list. Tap on Aesthetic/Theme and look for one of the Christmas-themed options. ![]() I love the candy cane option, and you can customize fonts, etc. For Christmas, Widgetsmith has a candy cane, lights, and a wreath camera option. Widgetsmith lets you add a host of themes to your calendar. While Apple has its own calendar widget, it’s a fairly standard design. The calendar widget in Widgetsmith is one of the best options. Since it’s the Christmas season, there are a number of options inside of Widgetsmith to give your widgets some Christmas flare. If you want to customize your home screen, there’s no better app. I have one on my home screen that has the weather until 7 a.m., then my calendar until 5 p.m., and then switches a family photo that overlays the weather. One of my favorite aspects of it is setting up time-based widgets to automatically rotate during the day. Widgetsmith is one of the best apps you can add to your iOS home screen to customize every aspect of it.
